FOSS Science

What is FOSS?

FOSS is a research-based science curriculum for grades K—8 that is dedicated to improving student learning through investigation.

FOSS by Grade Level

Grades 1-3 will teach three different science kits throughout the year, while kindergarten will teach two different science kits.

3rd Grade:

Physics of Sound:
In this science kit students learn about the different properties of sound, how sound is made and how sound can travel through different materials.
Click the link below to find out more about the Physics of Sound science kit and even play a game to compare how sound travels through air and water!

Structures of Life:

In this science kit students learn about seeds, fruits, crayfish and even snails! They explore the different behaviors and habitats of both of the crustaceans, as well as how to handle and observe them.
Click on the link below to find out more about the Structures of Life science kit and test your knowledge of life cycles while playing an interactive game.

Solid Earth:

In this science kit students learn about the properties of rocks, types of rocks and different landforms found on Earth. They learn how to identify different minerals by conducting experiments on them and recording their observations.
Click on the link below to find out more about the Solid Earth science kit and visit the geology lab to explore different kinds of rocks. www.fossweb.com/CA/modules3-6/SolidEarth/index.html

2nd Grade:

Air and Weather:
In this science kit students learn about air and weather and how it affects our daily lives. The students explore different clouds and learn about weather by building parachutes, pinwheels and wind vanes.
Click on the link below to find out more about the Air and Weather science kit and teach a bear how to dress based on the weather.

Solids and Liquids:
width = 20%
In this science kit students learn about matter and the differences between solids and liquids.
Click on the link below to find out more about the Solids and Liquids science kit and play a game where you can change solids into liquids and liquids into solids.

Insects:

In this science kit students learn about the life cycles of different insects, as well as their behaviors, eating habits and habitats. The students get to explore wax worms, meal worms, milkweed bugs and they even get to see caterpillars change into butterflies.
Click on the link below to find out more about the Insects science kit and go on an insect hunt to find different kinds of insects.

1st Grade:

Balance and Motion:
In this science kit students learn about the way objects move and what it takes to balance an object.
Click on the link below to find out more about the Balance and Motion science kit and develop a roller coaster to find out more about how objects move.

New Plants:
In this science kit students learn about the diversity of plants, how to care for plants and even how to grow plants. They observe the way plants grow and record their observations in their journals.
Click on the link below to find out more about the New Plants science kit and plant a plant an interactive garden and watch it grow!

Pebbles, Sand and Silt:
In this science kit students learn about earth's materials by investigating different types of rocks and resources.
Click on the link below to find out more about the Pebbles, Sand and Silt science kit and go on an interactive search to find out how earth's materials are used all around us.

Kindergarten:

Animals Two by Two:
In this science kit students learn about different kinds of land and water animals. They learn how to care for them and about their different structures and behaviors.
Click on the link below to find out more about the Animals Two by Two science kit and try matching young animals with what they will be when they grow to be an adult.

Wood and Paper:
In this science kit students explore a variety of different kinds of woods and paper, as well as how to change the properties of these materials.
Click on the link below to find out more about the Wood and Paper science kit and play a game where you try to find all of the materials made of wood or paper.
